Today is Sunday, a day that I usually spend at home alone. Although this seems natural for a Sunday, it is not normal right now, being the sixth day in a row at home alone. So what to do when you are alone? I have been in several houseparties last week with my friends, started an online course on writing and started reading a an English book because of the course. Although I do watch some television, I try to limit this as much as possible, especially during the day.
The online course has exercises I need to do in order to complete it successfully. This weeks’ exercise focussed on writing a review for a film or show. Firstly in an more academic way (short, formal, academic, objective) and then rewriting it into an informal reflection. Since I am not watching anything at the moment, I wrote something about a show I saw on Amazon Prime last February. It was fun to write about a television show which I enjoyed very much and can recommend to others. The hardest part was finding out what to write in the ‘academic’ review, besides facts I also needed to add some interpretation which was difficult. I am not sure I managed to do so.
Modern Love (academic)
The Amazon Prime series which is called “Modern Love” has one season containing eight episodes, which has a duration of approximately 60 minutes for each episode. The first season is available to watch and has an IMDB overall score of 8.0. The scores of the individual episodes vary between 6.3 and 8.4. The genre of the series is romance, comedy, drama according to Amazon Prime and are based on real stories. The episodes are all about love in the modern time, as the title suggests. The stories are diverse in the setup and storyline, some start at a first date while other episodes are about longlasting marriage. Each episode has its own characters and story, which makes it surprising to watch. The common ground is that all stories have a happy ending, sometimes in their own particular way, for the end of love can also be beautiful. Season two has not been announced, but even if the quality is slightly less than season one it is still worth watching.
Modern Love (informal)
Last February I watched the Amazon Prime show Modern Love. One month later, I still sometimes think about it, while it made such an impression on me. I will try to explain why. Though each episode has its own storyline and specific characters, I really enjoyed watching it. Some of the episodes are about longlastig marriage and others about young love. The latter is ofcourse a situation I can relate to easily but I must admit I also started feeling for the characters in the episodes I did not have an initial connection to. Because hey how can I relate to married couples struggling to stay together? Even some of the first dates looked a lot like mine, but had a much better ending for the characters in the show than it usually has for me. I do have to admit that I was surprised about the hospital episode, this could in fact be clumsy me. As you may sense from this review, I can highly recommend the show and I suggest you start watching it right now.
Modern Love (gloomy)
It took me only two days binge watching to finish the series called Modern Love. I was unable to stop watching other people move slowly towards the happy ending of each episode. Yet it is an Amazon Prime show and based on real love stories, I did sometimes feel close to the characters. This recognition only lasted shortly. It made me realise my own life is nothing like that. Marriage is not something I have experience with, besides it is a television show in which small topics are magnified. Every episode is a separate story, the analogy is that all episodes end up showing everybody is happy and satisfied. The hospital episode for example, has a character which could in fact be me. Though in real life a guy like him would just never end up with a girls like her. Just a warning, only watch it when you are up for feelgood television in its ultimate form.
